"The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life"

DAILY GOSPEL: 24/04/2010
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Saturday of the Third week of Easter

Acts of the Apostles 9:31-42.
The Church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria  was at peace.  She was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord,  and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit she grew in numbers.
As Peter was passing through every region, he went down to the holy ones living in Lydda.
There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been confined to bed for eight years, for he was paralyzed.
Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed." He got up at once.
And all the inhabitants of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.
Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which translated means Dorcas). She was completely occupied with good deeds and almsgiving.
Now during those days she fell sick and died, so after washing her, they laid (her) out in a room upstairs.
Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, "Please come to us without delay."
So Peter got up and went with them. When he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs where all the widows came to him weeping and showing him the tunics and cloaks that Dorcas had made while she was with them.
Peter sent them all out and knelt down and prayed. Then he turned to her body and said, "Tabitha, rise up." She opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up.
He gave her his hand and raised her up, and when he had called the holy ones and the widows, he presented her alive.
This became known all over Joppa, and many came to believe in the Lord.

Psalms 116(115):12-17.
How can I repay the LORD for all the good done for me?
I will raise the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.
I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.
Too costly in the eyes of the LORD is the death of his faithful.
LORD, I am your servant, your servant, the child of your maidservant; you have loosed my bonds.
I will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 6:60-69.
Many of the disciples of Jesus who were listening said,  «This saying is hard; who can accept it?»
Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you?
What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him.
And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father."
As a result of this, many (of) his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.
Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."

Commentary of the day
Saint Jerome (347-420), priest, translator of the Bible, Doctor of the Church
Lettre 53 to Paulinus
"The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life"
We read Holy Scripture: in my view, I think the Gospel is Jesus' body, Holy Scripture is his teaching. It's true that the text: «He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood» finds its most complete application in the mystery of the eucharist. But the true Body of Christ, the true Blood, is also contained in the word of Scripture and divine teaching. When we take part in the holy mysteries, we are concerned about it if a crumb should fall to the ground. When we hear the word of God, if we are thinking of something else while it enters our ears, what sort of responsibility will we not incur?

Since the Lord's flesh is food indeed and his blood is real drink, to eat his flesh and drink his blood is our only good, not just in the eucharistic mystery but in the reading of Scripture, too.

St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Capuchin Priest & Martyr (1577-1622)

SAINT FIDELIS OF SIGMARINGEN
Capuchin Priest and Martyr
(1577-1622)
Fidelis was born at Sigmaringen in 1577, of noble parents. In his youth he frequently approached the sacraments, visited the sick and the poor, and spent moreover many hours before the altar. For a time he followed the legal profession, and was remarkable for his advocacy of the poor and his respectful language towards his opponents.
Finding it difficult to become both a rich lawyer and a good Christian, Fidelis entered the Capuchin. Order, and embraced a life of austerity and prayer. Hair shirts, iron-pointed girdles, and disciplines were penances too light for his fervor; and being filled with a desire of martyrdom, he rejoiced at being sent to Switzerland by the newly-founded Congregation of Propaganda, and braved every peril to rescue souls from the diabolical heresy of Calvin.
When preaching at Sevis he was fired at by a Calvinist, but the fear of death could not deter him from proclaiming divine truth. After his sermon he was waylaid by a body of Protestants headed by a minister, who attacked him and tried to force him to embrace their so-called. reform. But he said, "I came to refute your errors, not to embrace them; I will never renounce Catholic doctrine, which is the truth of all ages, and I fear not death." On this they fell upon him with their poignards, and the first martyr of Propaganda went to receive his palm.

¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

Carta 53 a Paulino

"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life"

DAILY GOSPEL: 23/04/2010
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Friday of the Third week of Easter

Acts of the Apostles 9:1-20.
Saul, still breathing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord,  went to the high priest
and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, that, if he should find any men or women who belonged to the Way, e might bring them back to Jerusalem in chains.
On his journey, as he was nearing Damascus, a light from the sky suddenly flashed around him.
He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"
He said, "Who are you, sir?" The reply came, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.
Now get up and go into the city and you will be told what you must do."
The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, for they heard the voice but could see no one.
Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him to Damascus.
For three days he was unable to see, and he neither ate nor drank.
There was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias, and the Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." He answered, "Here I am, Lord."
The Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight and ask at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is there praying,
and (in a vision) he has seen a man named Ananias come in and lay (his) hands on him, that he may regain his sight."
But Ananias replied, "Lord, I have heard from many sources about this man, what evil things he has done to your holy ones in Jerusalem.
And here he has authority from the chief priests to imprison all who call upon your name."
But the Lord said to him, "Go, for this man is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before Gentiles, kings, and Israelites,
and I will show him what he will have to suffer for my name."
So Ananias went and entered the house; laying his hands on him, he said, "Saul, my brother, the Lord has sent me, Jesus who appeared to you on the way by which you came, that you may regain your sight and be filled with the holy Spirit."
Immediately things like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight. He got up and was baptized,
and when he had eaten, he recovered his strength. He stayed some days with the disciples in Damascus,
and he began at once to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

Psalms 117:1.2.
Praise the LORD, all you nations! Give glory, all you peoples!
The LORD'S love for us is strong; the LORD is faithful forever. Hallelujah!

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 6:52-59.
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying,  «How can this man give us his Flesh to eat?»
Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."
These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Letters of Padre Pio, Vicenza 1969
"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life"
- Father, I feel too unworthy to receive communion! Truly, I'm not worthy.

Reply: - Yes, it's true. We aren't worthy of such a gift. But it's one thing to participate unworthily in a state of grave sin and another not to be worthy of it. We are all unworthy of it, but it is Jesus who invites us, it is he who wants it. So let us be humble and receive it with loving hearts.

- Father, why do you weep when you receive communion?

Reply: - If the Church has cried out: «He did not despise the Virgin's womb» when speaking of his incarnation in the womb of the Immaculate Virgin, what can be said of us poor sinners? But Christ said: «Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you will not have life for ever.» In this case, let us come up to the communion rail with great love and veneration. May our whole day serve, first of all to prepare us for it and then to give thanks.

St. George, Martyr (280-303)

SAINT GEORGE
Martyr
(280-303)
St. George was born in Cappadocia, at the close of the third century, of Christian parents. In early youth he chose a soldier's life, and soon obtained the favor of Diocletian, who advanced him to the grade of tribune. When, however, the emperor began to persecute the Christians, George rebuked him at once sternly and openly for his cruelty, and threw up his commission. He was in consequence subjected to a lengthened series of torments, and finally beheaded.
There was something so inspiriting in the defiant cheerfulness of the young soldier, that every Christian felt a personal share in this triumph of Christian fortitude; and as years rolled on St. George became a type of successful combat against evil, the slayer of the dragon, the darling theme of camp song and story, until "so thick a shade his very glory round him made" that his real lineaments became hard to trace.
Even beyond the circle of Christendom he was held in honor, and invading Saracens taught themselves to except from desecration the image of him they hailed as the "White-horsed Knight."
The devotion to St. George is one of the most ancient and widely spread in the Church. In the East, a church of St. George is ascribed to Constantine, and his name is invoked in the most ancient liturgies; whilst in the West, Malta, Barcelona, Valencia, Arragon, Genoa, and England have chosen him as their patron.

¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

«This bread that came down from heaven, whoever eats it will live forever»

DAILY GOSPEL: 22/04/2010
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Thursday of the Third week of Easter

Acts of the Apostles 8:26-40.
The angel of the Lord spoke to Philip,  «Get up and head south on the road  that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza, the desert route.»
So he got up and set out. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, that is, the queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury, who had come to Jerusalem to worship,
and was returning home. Seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah.
The Spirit said to Philip, "Go and join up with that chariot."
Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?"
He replied, "How can I, unless someone instructs me?" So he invited Philip to get in and sit with him.
This was the scripture passage he was reading: "Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
In (his) humiliation justice was denied him. Who will tell of his posterity? For his life is taken from the earth."
Then the eunuch said to Philip in reply, "I beg you, about whom is the prophet saying this? About himself, or about someone else?"
Then Philip opened his mouth and, beginning with this scripture passage, he proclaimed Jesus to him.
As they traveled along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "Look, there is water. What is to prevent my being baptized?"

Then he ordered the chariot to stop, and Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water, and he baptized him.
When they came out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, but continued on his way rejoicing.
Philip came to Azotus, and went about proclaiming the good news to all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

Psalms 66(65):8-9.16-17.20.
Bless our God, you peoples; loudly sound his praise,
Who has kept us alive and not allowed our feet to slip.
Come and hear, all you who fear God, while I recount what has been done for me.
I called to the Lord with my mouth; praise was upon my tongue.
Blessed be God, who did not refuse me the kindness I sought in prayer.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 6:44-51.
Jesus said to the crowds:  «No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him,  and I will raise him on the last day.
It is written in the prophets: 'They shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me.
Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.
I am the bread of life.
Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;
this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."
 Jn 6,44-51
Commentary of the day
Saint Peter Damian (1007-1072), hermit then Bishop, Doctor of the Church
Sermon 45
«This bread that came down from heaven, whoever eats it will live forever»
The Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ, she warmed him in her arms, wrapped him in swaddling clothes and surrounded him with motherly care. This is the same Jesus whose body we now receive and whose redeeming blood we drink in the sacrament of the altar. This is what the Catholic Faith professes; this is what the Church teaches faithfully.

No human language could sufficiently glorify the one in whom, as we know, «the mediator between God and humankind» took flesh (1Tm 2,5). No human praise is adequate for the one whose pure womb produced the fruit that is food for our souls and who testifies by his own words: «I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever». And indeed, we who have been cast out of Paradise because of a fruit also find the joys of Paradise again by means of food of another kind. Eve took and ate one kind of food and we were condemned to an eternal fast; Mary brought forth another kind of food and the doors of the heavenly banquet were opened wide.

St. Soter was raised to the papacy upon the death of St. Anicetus, in 166. By the sweetness of his discourses he comforted all persons with the tenderness of a father, and assisted the indigent with liberal alms, especially those who suffered for the faith.
He liberally extended his charities, according to the custom of his predecessors, to remote churches, particularly to that of Corinth, to which he addressed an excellent letter, as St. Dionysius of Corinth testifies in his letter of thanks, who adds that his letter was found worthy to be read for their edification on Sundays at their assemblies to celebrate the divine mysteries, together with the letter of St. Clement, pope.
St. Soter vigorously opposed the heresy of Montanus, and governed the Church to the year 175.

¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

apenas mi boca clamó hacia él, mi lengua comenzó a alabarlo.

«I am the bread of life"

DAILY GOSPEL: 21/04/2010
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Wednesday of the Third week of Easter

Acts of the Apostles 8:1-8.
There broke out a severe persecution of the Church in Jerusalem,  and all were scattered  throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria,  except the Apostles.
Devout men buried Stephen and made a loud lament over him.
Saul, meanwhile, was trying to destroy the church; entering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment.
Now those who had been scattered went about preaching the word.
Thus Philip went down to (the) city of Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them.
With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philip when they heard it and saw the signs he was doing.
For unclean spirits, crying out in a loud voice, came out of many possessed people, and many paralyzed and crippled people were cured.
There was great joy in that city.

Psalms 66(65):1-3.4-5.6-7.
For the leader. A song; a psalm.
Shout joyfully to God, all you on earth; sing of his glorious name; give him glorious praise.
Say to God: "How awesome your deeds! Before your great strength your enemies cringe.
All on earth fall in worship before you; they sing of you, sing of your name!" Selah
Come and see the works of God, awesome in the deeds done for us.
He changed the sea to dry land; through the river they passed on foot. Therefore let us rejoice in him,
who rules by might forever, Whose eyes are fixed upon the nations. Let no rebel rise to challenge! Selah

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 6:35-40.
Jesus said to the crowds,  «I am the bread of life;  whoever comes to me will never hunger,  and whoever believes in me will never thirst.
But I told you that although you have seen (me), you do not believe.
Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me,
because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.
And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it (on) the last day.
For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him (on) the last day."
Jn 6,35-40
Commentary of the day
Baldwin of Ford (?-c.1190), Cistercian abbot
The  Sacrament of the altar, II, 3 (SC 93, p.255f.)
«I am the bread of life"
Christ says: «Whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst»... And the psalmist says: «bread fortifies the hearts of men» and «wine gladdens men's hearts» (Ps 104[103],15). Christ is food and drink, bread and wine to those who believe in him: bread that strengthens and fortifies..., drink and wine that gladdens... All that is strong and firm in us, that is joyful and glad to carry out God's commands, bear suffering, put obedience into effect and stand up for justice: all these things consist in the strength of this bread and joy of this wine. How blessed are they who act boldly and joyfully! And since no one is able to do this unaided, blessed are they who longingly desire to put into practice what is just and right and to be strengthened and gladdened in everything by him who said: «Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness» (Mt 5,6). If Christ is the food and drink that ensures the strength and joy of the righteous even now, how much more will he be so in heaven when he gives himself to the righteous without measure?

Note how, in the words of Christ..., the food that remains for eternal life is called bread from heaven, true bread, the bread of God, the bread of life... It is bread of God to distinguish it from bread made and prepared by the baker...; it is bread of life  to distinguish it from the perishable bread that neither is, nor gives life but barely keeps it going with difficulty and for a time. This bread, however, is life, gives life, preserves in being the life that has nothing to do with death.

St. Anselm, Archishop an Doctor of the Church (1033-1109)

SAINT ANSELM
Archbishop and Doctor of the Church
(1033-1109)
Anselm was a native of Piedmont. When a boy of fifteen, being forbidden to enter religion, he for a while lost his fervor, left his home, and went to various schools in France. At length his vocation revived, and he became a monk at Bec in Normandy.
The fame of his sanctity in this cloister led William Rufus, when dangerously ill, to take him for his confessor, and to name him to the vacant see of Canterbury. Now began the strife of Anselm's life. With new health the king relapsed into his former sins, plundered the Church lands, scorned the archbishop's rebukes, and forbade him to go to Rome for the pallium.
Anselm went, and returned only to enter into a more bitter strife with William's successor, Henry I. This sovereign claimed the right of investing prelates with the ring and crozier, symbols of the spiritual jurisdiction which belongs to the Church alone. The worldly prelates did not scruple to call St. Anselm a traitor for his defence of the Pope's supremacy; on which the Saint rose, and with calm dignity exclaimed, "If any man pretends that I violate my faith to my king because I will not reject the authority of the Holy See of Rome, let him stand forth, and in the name of God I will answer him as I ought" No one took up the challenge; and to the disappointment of the king, the barons sided with the Saint, for they respected his courage, and saw that his cause was their own. Sooner than yield, the archbishop went again into exile, till at last the king was obliged to submit to the feeble but inflexible old man.
In the midst of his harassing cares, St. Anselm found time for writings which have made him celebrated as the father of scholastic theology; while in metaphysics and in science he had few equals.
He is yet more famous for his devotion to our blessed Lady, whose Feast of the Immaculate Conception he was the first to establish in the West.
        He died in 1109.

«Yo soy el pan de vida»

EVANGELIO DEL DÍA: 21/04/2010
¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

Salmo 66(65),1-3.4-5.6-7.
Del maestro de coro. Canto. Salmo. ¡Aclame al Señor toda la tierra!
¡Canten la gloria de su Nombre! Tribútenle una alabanza gloriosa,
digan al Señor: "¡Qué admirables son tus obras!". Por la inmensidad de tu poder, tus enemigos te rinden pleitesía;

1 Jn 5, 3-5

DAILY GOSPEL: 20/04/2010
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Tuesday of the Third week of Easter

Acts of the Apostles 7:51-60.8:1.
Stephen said to the people, the elders, and the scribes:  «You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears,  you always oppose the Holy Spirit;  you are just like your ancestors.
Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.
You received the law as transmitted by angels, but you did not observe it."
When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him.
But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."
But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together.
They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.
As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them"; and when he said this, he fell asleep.
Now Saul was consenting to his execution. On that day, there broke out a severe persecution of the church in Jerusalem, and all were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.

Psalms 31(30):3-4.6.7.8.17.21.
Incline your ear to me; make haste to rescue me! Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to save me.
You are my rock and my fortress; for your name's sake lead and guide me.
Into your hands I commend my spirit; you will redeem me, LORD, faithful God.
You hate those who serve worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD.
I will rejoice and be glad in your love, once you have seen my misery, observed my distress.
Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your kindness.
You hide them in the shelter of your presence, safe from scheming enemies. You keep them in your abode, safe from plotting tongues.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 6:30-35.
The crowd said to Jesus:  «What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you?  What can you do?
Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
So Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always."
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.
Jn 6,30-35
Commentary of the day
Saint Justin (c.100-160), philosopher and martyr
First Apology, 67.66 ; PG 6, 427-431 (trans. Herbert Musurillo)
"The true bread from heaven": from the second century; one of the first descriptions of the Eucharist outside the New Testament.
And so on the day called Sunday there is an assembly in one place of all who live in the cities or in the country; the memorials of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read as long as time allows. After the reader has finished, the presiding officer verbally instructs and exhorts us to imitate these shining examples. Then we all rise and pray together. Next, as I said before, when we finish the prayer, bread, wine, and water are brought up. The presiding officer once again offers up prayers of thanksgiving according to his strength, and then the people cry out "amen" (meaning, in Hebrew, 'May it be so').

And this food we call the Eucharist, and no one is allowed to partake of it unless he believes our doctrine is true and has been washed in the laver for regeneration and the forgiveness of sins, and so lives as Christ has taught. For we do not partake of this as ordinary food and drink; but just as the Word of God incarnate, Jesus Christ our Savior, took on flesh and blood for our salvation, so too the food over which the thanksgiving prayer has been pronounced through the word which came from him, and by which our flesh and blood are changed and nourished-this food we have been taught is the very flesh and blood of Jesus. For the apostles in the memorials which they wrote, called the Gospels, declared that Jesus ordered them to act in this way. Jesus, taking bread, gave thanks and said, "Do this in commemoration of me: this is my body.» And likewise, taking up the cup, he gave thanks and said, «This is my blood» and gave it to them alone (Mt 26,26f;1Co 11,23f.)... We all hold this common assembly on Sunday because it is the first day of the week, on which God made the world, changing darkness and matter, and on which Christ Jesus our Savior rose from the dead.

St. Marcellinus, Bishop (4th century)

SAINT MARCELLINUS
Bishop
(4th century)
St. Marcellinus was born in Africa, of a noble family; accompanied by Vincent and Domninus, he went over into Gaul, and there preached the Gospel, with great success, in the neighborhood of the Alps.
He afterwards settled at Embrun, where he built a chapel in which he passed his nights in prayer, after laboring all the day in the exercise of his sacred calling. By his pious example as well as by his earnest words, he converted many of the heathens among whom he lived.
He was afterwards made bishop of the people whom he had won over to Christ, but the date of his consecration is not positively known. Burning with zeal for the glory of God, he sent Vincent and Domninus to preach the faith in those parts which he could not visit in person.
He died at Embrun about the year 374, and was there interred. St. Gregory of Tours, who speaks of Marcellinus in terms of highest praise, mentions many miracles as happening at his tomb.

EVANGELIO DEL DÍA: 20/04/2010
¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

Ellos comenzaron a vociferar y, tapándose los oídos, se precipitaron sobre él como un solo hombre;

Salmo 31(30),3-4.6.7.8.17.21.
Inclina tu oído hacia mí y ven pronto a socorrerme.
Que brille tu rostro sobre tu servidor, sálvame por tu misericordia;

Jesús respondió: "Les aseguro que no es Moisés el que les dio el pan del cielo; mi Padre les da el verdadero pan del cielo;
