Holy Thursday

Book of Exodus 12:1-8.11-14.
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,
"This month shall stand at the head of your calendar; you shall reckon it the first month of the year.
Tell the whole community of Israel: On the tenth of this month every one of your families must procure for itself a lamb, one apiece for each household.
If a family is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join the nearest household in procuring one and shall share in the lamb in proportion to the number of persons who partake of it.
The lamb must be a year-old male and without blemish. You may take it from either the sheep or the goats.
You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, and then, with the whole assembly of Israel present, it shall be slaughtered during the evening twilight.
They shall take some of its blood and apply it to the two doorposts and the lintel of every house in which they partake of the lamb.
That same night they shall eat its roasted flesh with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
"This is how you are to eat it: with your loins girt, sandals on your feet and your staff in hand, you shall eat like those who are in flight. It is the Passover of the LORD.
For on this same night I will go through Egypt, striking down every first--born of the land, both man and beast, and executing judgment on all the gods of Egypt-I, the LORD!
But the blood will mark the houses where you are. Seeing the blood, I will pass over you; thus, when I strike the land of Egypt, no destructive blow will come upon you.
"This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebrate with pilgrimage to the LORD, as a perpetual institution.

Psalms 116(115):12-13.15-16.17-18.
How can I repay the LORD for all the good done for me?
I will raise the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.
Too costly in the eyes of the LORD is the death of his faithful.
LORD, I am your servant, your servant, the child of your maidservant; you have loosed my bonds.
I will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD.
I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people,

First Letter to the Corinthians 11:23-26.
For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread,
and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 13:1-15.
Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end.
The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So, during supper,
fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God,
he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist.
Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Master, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later."
Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me."
Simon Peter said to him, "Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well."
Jesus said to him, "Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all."
For he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said, "Not all of you are clean."
So when he had washed their feet (and) put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, "Do you realize what I have done for you?
You call me 'teacher' and 'master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am.
If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet.
I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.

Sermon for Holy Thursday

"He loved them to the end"

What great love, what charity was that of Jesus Christ when he chose the evening of the day he was to be put to death to institute a sacrament through which he would remain in our midst, to be our Father, Consoler, and all our good! Still happier than those who were alive during his mortal life, when he was only in one place and people had to come from a great distance if they were to have the joy of seeing him, now, today we find him everywhere in the world and this joy is promised to me until the world's end. O what great love was that of God for his creatures!

       No indeed! Nothing could stop him when it came to showing us the greatness of his love. At that happy moment for us, all Jerusalem was on fire, all the people in an uproar, everyone was plotting his harm, everyone wanting to shed his precious blood – and yet it was precisely at that moment that he prepared for them, as for us, the most unutterable testimony of his love.

        It was the happiness of this Saint to receive from his cradle the strongest impressions of piety by the example and care of his illustrious and holy parents. He was born at Chateau-neuf, in the territory of Valence in Dauphiné, in 1053. His father, Odilo, who served his country in an honorable post in the army, labored by all the means in his power to make his soldiers faithful servants of their Creator, and by severe punishments to restrain vice.

        By the advice of his son, St. Hugh, he afterwards became a Carthusian monk, and died at the age of a hundred, having received Extreme Unction and Viaticum from the hands of his son. Our Saint likewise assisted, in her last moments, his mother, who had for many years, under his direction, served God in her own house, by prayer, fasting, and plenteous alms-deeds. Hugh, from the cradle, appeared to be a child of benediction. He went through his studies with great applause, and having chosen to serve God in an ecclesiastical state, he accepted a canonry in the cathedral of Valence.

        His great sanctity and learning rendered him an ornament of that church, and he was finally made Bishop of Grenoble. He set himself at once to reprove vice and to reform abuses, and so plentiful was the benediction of Heaven upon his labors that he had the comfort to see the face of his diocese in a short time exceedingly changed. After two years he privately resigned his bishopric, presuming on the tacit consent of the Holy See, and, putting on the habit of St. Bennet, he entered upon a novitiate in the austere abbey of Casa-Dei in Auvergne. There he lived a year, a perfect model of all virtues to that house of Saints, till Pope Gregory VII. commanded him, in virtue of holy obedience, to resume his pastoral charge.

        He earnestly solicited Pope Innocent II. for leave to resign his bishopric, that he might die in solitude, but was never able to obtain his request. God was pleased to purify his soul by a lingering illness before He called him to Himself. Some time before his death he lost his memory for everything but his prayers.

        He closed his penitential course on the 1st of April in 1132, wanting only two months of being Eighty years old, of which he had been fifty-two years bishop. Miracles attested the sanctity of his happy death, and he was canonized by Innocent II. in 1134.

Jueves Santo en la Cena del Señor

Libro del Exodo 12,1-8.11-14.
Luego el Señor dijo a Moisés y a Aarón en la tierra de Egipto:
Este mes será para ustedes el mes inicial, el primero de los meses del año.
Digan a toda la comunidad de Israel: El diez de este mes, consíganse cada uno un animal del ganado menor, uno para cada familia.
Si la familia es demasiado reducida para consumir un animal entero, se unirá con la del vecino que viva más cerca de su casa. En la elección del animal tengan en cuenta, además del número de comensales, lo que cada uno come habitualmente.
Elijan un animal sin ningún defecto, macho y de un año; podrá ser cordero o cabrito.
Deberán guardarlo hasta el catorce de este mes, y a la hora del crepúsculo, lo inmolará toda la asamblea de la comunidad de Israel.
Después tomarán un poco de su sangre, y marcarán con ella los dos postes y el dintel de la puerta de las casas donde lo coman.
Y esa misma noche comerán la carne asada al fuego, con panes sin levadura y verduras amargas.
Deberán comerlo así: ceñidos con un cinturón, calzados con sandalias y con el bastón en la mano. Y lo comerán rápidamente: es la Pascua del Señor.
Esa noche yo pasaré por el país de Egipto para exterminar a todos sus primogénitos, tanto hombres como animales, y daré un justo escarmiento a los dioses de Egipto. Yo soy el Señor.
La sangre les servirá de señal para indicar las casas donde ustedes estén. Al verla, yo pasaré de largo, y así ustedes se librarán del golpe del Exterminador, cuando yo castigue al país de Egipto.
Este será para ustedes un día memorable y deberán solemnizarlo con una fiesta en honor del Señor. Lo celebrarán a lo largo de las generaciones como una institución perpetua.

Salmo 116(115),12-13.15-16.17-18.
¿Con qué pagaré al Señor todo el bien que me hizo?
Alzaré la copa de la salvación e invocaré el nombre del Señor.
¡Qué penosa es para el Señor la muerte de sus amigos!
Yo, Señor, soy tu servidor, tu servidor, lo mismo que mi madre: por eso rompiste mis cadenas.
Te ofreceré un sacrificio de alabanza, e invocaré el nombre del Señor.
Cumpliré mis votos al Señor, en presencia de todo su pueblo,

Carta I de San Pablo a los Corintios 11,23-26.
Lo que yo recibí del Señor, y a mi vez les he transmitido, es lo siguiente: El Señor Jesús, la noche en que fue entregado, tomó el pan,
dio gracias, lo partió y dijo: "Esto es mi Cuerpo, que se entrega por ustedes. Hagan esto en memoria mía".
De la misma manera, después de cenar, tomó la copa, diciendo: "Esta copa es la Nueva Alianza que se sella con mi Sangre. Siempre que la beban, háganlo en memora mía".
Y así, siempre que coman este pan y beban esta copa, proclamarán la muerte del Señor hasta que él vuelva.

Evangelio según San Juan 13,1-15.
Antes de la fiesta de Pascua, sabiendo Jesús que había llegado la hora de pasar de este mundo al Padre, él, que había amado a los suyos que quedaban en el mundo, los amó hasta el fin.
Durante la Cena, cuando el demonio ya había inspirado a Judas Iscariote, hijo de Simón, el propósito de entregarlo,
sabiendo Jesús que el Padre había puesto todo en sus manos y que él había venido de Dios y volvía a Dios,
se levantó de la mesa, se sacó el manto y tomando una toalla se la ató a la cintura.
Luego echó agua en un recipiente y empezó a lavar los pies a los discípulos y a secárselos con la toalla que tenía en la cintura.
Cuando se acercó a Simón Pedro, este le dijo: "¿Tú, Señor, me vas a lavar los pies a mí?".
Jesús le respondió: "No puedes comprender ahora lo que estoy haciendo, pero después lo comprenderás".
"No, le dijo Pedro, ¡tú jamás me lavarás los pies a mí!". Jesús le respondió: "Si yo no te lavo, no podrás compartir mi suerte".
"Entonces, Señor, le dijo Simón Pedro, ¡no sólo los pies, sino también las manos y la cabeza!".
Jesús le dijo: "El que se ha bañado no necesita lavarse más que los pies, porque está completamente limpio. Ustedes también están limpios, aunque no todos".
El sabía quién lo iba a entregar, y por eso había dicho: "No todos ustedes están limpios".
Después de haberles lavado los pies, se puso el manto, volvió a la mesa y les dijo: "¿comprenden lo que acabo de hacer con ustedes?
Ustedes me llaman Maestro y Señor; y tienen razón, porque lo soy.
Si yo, que soy el Señor y el Maestro, les he lavado los pies, ustedes también deben lavarse los pies unos a otros.
Les he dado el ejemplo, para que hagan lo mismo que yo hice con ustedes.

Sermón para el Jueves Santo

«Los amó hasta el extremo»

     ¡Qué amor, qué caridad la de nuestro Señor Jesucristo al escoger la vigilia del día en que habían de hacerle morir para instituir un sacramento por el cual iba a quedarse entre nosotros, para ser nuestro Padre, nuestro Consolador y toda nuestra felicidad! Más felices somos nosotros que los que vivían en tiempo de su vida mortal en que él no estaba en un lugar fijo, en que era necesario desplazarse lejos para tener la dicha de verle; hoy le encontramos en todas los lugares del mundo, y esta dicha se me ha prometido ser realidad hasta que se acabe el mundo. ¡Oh amor inmenso de un Dios por sus criaturas!
     No, nada puede hacerle parar cuando se trata de mostrarnos la grandeza de su amor. En este momento, dichoso para nosotros, toda Jerusalén esta ardiendo, todo el populacho hecho una furia, todos conspiran su perdición, todos quieren se derrame su sangre adorable –y es precisamente en este momento- que él les prepara, igual que a nosotros, la prueba más inefable de su amor.

San Hugo

San Hugo, (significa "el inteligente"), obispo, nació en Francia en el año 1052.

Gregorio VII ordenó de obispo a Hugo cuándo sólo tenía 28 años,  lo envió a dirigir la diócesis de Grenoble, en Francia. Allá estará de obispo por 50 años, aunque intentará renunciar al cargo ante 5 Pontífices, pero ninguno se la aceptará.

El dedicaba largas horas a la oración y a la meditación y recorría su diócesis de parroquia en parroquia corrigiendo abusos y enseñando cómo obrar el bien. Creyéndose un inepto y un inútil para este cargo, se fue a un convento a rezar y a hacer penitencia.    Pero el Sumo Pontífice Gregorio VII, que lo necesitaba muchísimo para que le ayudara a volver más fervorosa a la gente, lo llamó paternalmente y lo hizo retornar otra vez a su diócesis a seguir siendo obispo.

Un día llegó San Bruno con 6 amigos a pedirle a San Hugo que les concediera un sitio donde fundar un convento de gran rigidez, para los que quisieran hacerse santos basado en oración, silencio, ayunos, estudio y meditación. El santo obispo les dio un sitio llamado Cartuja, fue fundada la Orden de los Cartujos, donde el silencio es perpetuo (hablan el domingo de Pascua) y donde el ayuno, la mortificación y la oración llevan a sus religiosos a una gran santidad.    Para San Hugo sus días en la Cartuja eran como un oasis en medio del desierto de este mundo corrompido y corruptor, pero cuando ya llevaba varios días allí, su director San Bruno le avisaba que Dios lo quería al frente de su diócesis, y tenía que volverse otra vez a su ciudad.

Los sacerdotes más fervorosos y el pueblo humilde aceptaban con muy buena voluntad las órdenes y consejos del Santo obispo.    Varias veces fue a Roma a visitar al Papa y a rogarle que le quitara aquel oficio de obispo porque no se creía digno. Pero ni Gregorio VII, ni Urbano II, ni Pascual II, ni Inocencio II, quisieron aceptarle su renuncia porque sabían que era un gran apóstol.    Cuando ya muy anciano le pidió al Papa Honorio II que lo librara de aquel cargo porque estaba muy viejo, débil y enfermo, el Sumo Pontífice le respondió: "Prefiero de obispo a Hugo, viejo, débil y enfermo, antes que a otro que esté lleno de juventud y de salud".    Era un gran orador, y como rezaba mucho antes de predicar, sus sermones conmovían profundamente a sus oyentes.

Era muy frecuente que en medio de sus sermones, grandes pecadores empezaran a llorar a grito entero y a suplicar a grandes voces que el Señor Dios les perdonara sus pecados. Sus sermones obtenían numerosas conversiones.

Al final de su vida la artritis le producía dolores inmensos y continuos pero nadie se daba cuenta de que estaba sufriendo, porque sabía colocar una muralla de sonrisas para que nadie supiera los dolores que estaba padeciendo por amor a Dios y salvación de las almas. Un día al verlo llorar por sus pecados le dijo un hombre: "- Padre, ¿por qué llora, si jamás ha cometido un pecado deliberado y plenamente aceptado?- ". Y él le respondió: "El Señor Dios encuentra manchas hasta en sus propios ángeles. Y yo quiero decirle con el salmista: "Señor, perdóname aun de aquellos pecados de los cuales yo no me he dado cuenta y no recuerdo".  Murió a los 80 años, el 1 de abril de 1132. El Papa Inocencio II lo declaró santo, dos años después de su muerte.

Oremos

Señor, tú que colocaste a San Hugo en el número de los santos pastores y lo hiciste brillar por el ardor de la caridad y de aquella fe que vence al mundo, haz que también nosotros, por su intercesión, perseveremos firmes en la fe y arraigados en el amor y merezcamos así participar de su gloria. Por nuestro Señor Jesucristo, tu Hijo.
