Following the servant Christ to the last place

DAILY GOSPEL: 29/08/2010
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Book of Sirach 3:17-18.20.28-29.
My son, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.
Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God.
What is too sublime for you, seek not, into things beyond your strength search not.
The mind of a sage appreciates proverbs, and an attentive ear is the wise man's joy.
Water quenches a flaming fire, and alms atone for sins.

Psalms 68(67):4-5.6-7.10-11.
Then the just will be glad; they will rejoice before God; they will celebrate with great joy.
Sing to God, praise the divine name; exalt the rider of the clouds. Rejoice before this God whose name is the LORD.
Father of the fatherless, defender of widows-- this is the God whose abode is holy,
Who gives a home to the forsaken, who leads prisoners out to prosperity, while rebels live in the desert.
You claimed a land as your own, O God;
your people settled there. There you poured abundant rains, God, graciously given to the poor in their need.

Letter to the Hebrews 12:18-19.22-24.
You have not approached that which could be touched and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness and storm
and a trumpet blast and a voice speaking words such that those who heard begged that no message be further addressed to them,
No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering,
and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all, and the spirits of the just made perfect,
and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and the sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently than that of Abel.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 14:1.7-14.
On a sabbath he went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully.
He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table.
When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,
and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, 'Give your place to this man,' and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.
Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, 'My friend, move up to a higher position.' Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table.
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
Then he said to the host who invited him, "When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.
Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;
blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

Following the servant Christ to the last place
[Christ:] See [my] devotion to men and consider what your own should be. See that humility for man’s good and learn to humble yourself to do good…; to make yourself small to win others; not to fear to go lower or lose your rights when it is a matter of doing good; not to believe that in descending you make yourself powerless to do good. To the contrary, by descending you imitate me; by descending you make use of the same means, for the love of humankind, that I myself employed; by descending you walk in my way and, therefore, in the truth and you are in the best place to lay hold of life and give it to others…By my incarnation I place myself on a level with creatures; by my baptism …on that of sinners; descent, humility…Always descend, always humble yourself.

Let those who are first always stand in the last place, through humility and in disposition of spirit, with an attitude of descent and service. Love of men, humility, the last place: in the last place so long as the divine will does not call you to another, since then you must obey. Obedience before all else; conformity to God’s will. In the first place be spiritually in the last, through humility: occupy it in the spirit of service, telling yourself that you are only there to serve others and lead them to salvation.

The Beheading of John the Baptist,Martyr

THE BEHEADING OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST
Martyr
Memorial
St. John the Baptist was called by God to be the forerunner of his divine Son. In order to preserve his innocence spotless, and to improve the extraordinary graces which he had received, he was directed by the Holy Spirit to lead an austere and contemplative life in the wilderness, in the continual exercises of devout prayer and penance, from his infancy till he was thirty years of age.
At this age the faithful minister began to discharge his mission. Clothed with the weeds of penance, be announced to all men the obligation they lay under of washing away their iniquities with the tears of sincere compunction; and proclaimed the Messias, who was then coming to make his appearance among them. He was received by the people as the true herald of the Most High God, and his voice was, as it were, a trumpet sounding from heaven to summon all men to avert the divine judgments, and to prepare themselves to reap the benefit of Vie mercy that was offered them.
The tetrarch Herod Antipas having, in defiance of all laws divine and human, married Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, who was yet living, St. John the Baptist boldly reprehended the tetrarch and his accomplice for so scandalous an incest and adultery, and Herod, urged on by lust and anger, cast the Saint into prison.
About a year after St. John had been made a prisoner, Herod gave a splendid entertainment to the nobility of Galilee. Salome, a daughter of Herodias by her lawful husband, pleased Herod by her dancing, insomuch that he promised her to grant whatever she asked. On this, Salome consulted with her mother what to ask. Herodias instructed her daughter to demand the death of John the Baptist, and persuaded the young damsel to make it part of her petition that the head of the prisoner should be forthwith brought to her in a dish. This strange request startled the tyrant himself; he assented, however, and sent a soldier of his guard to behead the Saint in prison, with an order to bring his head in a charger and present it to Salome, who delivered it to her mother. St. Jerome relates that the furious Herodias made it her inhuman pastime to prick the sacred tongue with a bodkin.
Thus died the great forerunner of our blessed Saviour, about two years and three months after his entrance upon his public ministry, about a year before the death of our blessed Redeemer.

EVANGELIO DEL DÍA: 29/08/2010
¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

Tú derramaste una lluvia generosa, Señor: tu herencia estaba exhausta y tú la reconfortaste;

Magno profeta.

Hoy, cuando triunfas valeroso, arranca

De nuestro pecho el corazón de piedra,

El camino torcido  guía, allana

Las asperezas.

Porque, al venir el

Redentor piadoso

Y libres ya las mentes de torpeza,

Se digne colocar sus plantas límpidas

Sobre la tierra.

La corte celestial con alabanzas

A ti, Dios trino y uno, te celebra,

Mientras los redimidos imploramos

 Hoy tu clemencia.

Concede, Padre piadoso,

Seguir de Juan las pisadas.

Para disfrutar con Cristo

De la eterna venturanza. Amén

"You gave me five talents. See, I have made five more."

DAILY GOSPEL: 28/08/2010
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Saturday of the Twenty-first week in Ordinary Time

First Letter to the Corinthians 1:26-31.
Consider your own calling, brothers. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.
Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong,
and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something,
so that no human being might boast before God.
It is due to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption,
so that, as it is written, "Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord."

Psalms 33(32):12-13.18-19.20-21.
Happy the nation whose God is the LORD, the people chosen as his very own.
From heaven the LORD looks down and observes the whole human race,
But the LORD'S eyes are upon the reverent, upon those who hope for his gracious help,
Delivering them from death, keeping them alive in times of famine.
Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and shield.
For in God our hearts rejoice; in your holy name we trust.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 25:14-30.
It will be as when a man who was going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them.
To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one--to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Immediately
the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five.
Likewise, the one who received two made another two.
But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master's money.
After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them.
The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.'
(Then) the one who had received two talents also came forward and said, 'Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.'
Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, 'Master, I knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter;
so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back.'
His master said to him in reply, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter?
Should you not then have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it back with interest on my return?
Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten.
For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.'
Mt 25,14-30

"You gave me five talents. See, I have made five more."
In the face of these immense efforts which already preoccupy the whole human race, men agitate numerous questions among themselves. What is the meaning and value of this feverish activity?...

To believers, this point is settled: considered in itself, this human activity accords with God's will. For man, created to God's image, received a mandate to subject to himself the earth and all it contains (Gn 1,27-28), and to govern the world with justice and holiness; a mandate to relate himself and the totality of things to Him Who was to be acknowledged as the Lord and Creator of all. Thus, by the subjection of all things to man, the name of God would be wonderful in all the earth...

For the greater man's power becomes, the farther his individual and community responsibility extends. Hence it is clear that men are not deterred by the Christian message from building up the world, or impelled to neglect the welfare of their fellows, but that they are rather more stringently bound to do these very things.

St. Augustine, bishop and doctor of the Church

SAINT AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO
Bishop and Doctor of the Church
(354-430)
St. Augustine was born in 354, at Tagaste in Africa. He was brought up in the Christian faith, but without receiving baptism. An ambitious school-boy of brilliant talents and violent passions, he early lost both his faith and his innocence. He persisted in his irregular life until he was thirty-two. Being then at Milan professing rhetoric, he tells us that the faith of his childhood had regained possession of his intellect, but that he could not as yet resolve to break the chains of evil habit.
One day, a however, stung to the heart by the account of some sudden conversions, be cried out, "The unlearned rise and storm heaven, and we, with all our learning, for lack of heart lie wallowing here." He then withdrew into a garden, when a long and terrible conflict ensued. Suddenly a young fresh voice (he knows not whose) breaks in upon his strife with the words, "Take and read;" and he lights upon the passage beginning, "Walk honestly as in the day." The battle was won. He received baptism, returned home, and gave all to the poor.
At Hippo, where he settled, he was consecrated bishop in 395. For thirty-five years he was the centre of ecclesiastical life in Africa, and the Church's mightiest champion against heresy; whilst his writings have been everywhere accepted as one of the principal sources of devotional thought and theological speculation.
        He died in 430.

¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

Al contrario, Dios eligió lo que el mundo tiene por necio, para confundir a los sabios; lo que el mundo tiene por débil, para confundir a los fuertes;

El Señor observa desde el cielo y contempla a todos los hombres;

«Señor, cinco talentos me dejaste; mira, he ganado otros cinco»

¡ Oh sabiduría siempre antigua y siempre nueva. Cuan tarde te he conocido!".

"Behold, the bridegroom!"

DAILY GOSPEL: 27/08/2010
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Friday of the Twenty-first week in Ordinary Time

First Letter to the Corinthians 1:17-25.
For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with the wisdom of human eloquence, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning.
The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the learning of the learned I will set aside."
Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish?
For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith.
For Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom,
but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

Psalms 33(32):1-2.4-5.10.11.
Rejoice, you just, in the LORD; praise from the upright is fitting.
Give thanks to the LORD on the harp; on the ten-stringed lyre offer praise.
For the LORD'S word is true; all his works are trustworthy.
The LORD loves justice and right and fills the earth with goodness.
The LORD foils the plan of nations, frustrates the designs of peoples.
But the plan of the LORD stands forever, wise designs through all generations.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 25:1-13.
Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them,
but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.
Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
At midnight, there was a cry, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'
Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps.
The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'
But the wise ones replied, 'No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.'
While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked.
Afterwards the other virgins came and said, 'Lord, Lord, open the door for us!'
But he said in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.'
Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

"Behold, the bridegroom!"

A serious lack of harmony reigned between God and ourselves. The Son of God had to espouse our nature if he was to bring peace to the situation and restore good understanding... To this the Father gave his consent and sent his Son. He, in the nuptial bed of the Blessed Virgin, united our nature to his own. Such was the wedding the Father then made for his Son. John Damascene says that the Word of God took on everything God had placed in our nature: both body and rational soul. He took it all that all of me might be saved by his grace. Divinity stooped down even to this marriage; flesh could not have engaged in a marriage more glorious.

A wedding is celebrated again when the Holy Spirit's grace comes down to work the sinful soul's conversion. We read in the prophet Hosea: «I will go back to my first husband for then it will be better for me than it is now» (cf. Hos 2,9). And further on: «She shall call me 'My husband' and never again 'My baal'. Then I will remove from her mouth the names of the Baals... I will make a covenant for them...» (vv.18-20). The souls' husband is the Holy Spirit, by his grace. When his interior inspiration calls the soul to repentance then every enticement of vice is in vain. The pride that wants command, the greed and lust that consumes everything: this was the master that used to control and ravage the soul. Their very names have been removed from the repentant sinner's mouth... When grace is poured into the soul and gives it light, God makes a covenant with sinners. He is reconciled with them... Then is celebrated the wedding of the bridegroom with his bride in the peace of a pure conscience.

Finally, a wedding is celebrated on the day of judgement when Jesus Christ, our Bridegroom, comes. «Behold, the Bridegroom comes,» it is said; «go out to meet him.» Then he will take the Church, his Bride, with him. «Come here,» says Saint John in the Book of Revelation, «I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven» (21,9-10)... At the present time we are living in heaven only by faith and hope, but very soon the Church will celebrate her wedding with the Bridegroom: «Blessed are those who are called to the wedding feast of the Lamb» (Rv 19,9).

St. Monica (332-387)

SAINT MONICA
(332-387)

Monica, the mother of St. Augustine, was born in 332. A girlhood of singular innocence and piety, she was given in marriage to Patritius, a pagan. She at once devoted herself to his conversion, praying for him always, and winning his reverence and love by the holiness of her life and her affectionate forbearance. She was rewarded by seeing him baptized a year before his death.
When her son Augustine went astray in faith and manners her prayers and tears were incessant. She was once very urgent with a learned bishop that he would talk to her son in order to bring him to a better mind, but he declined, despairing of success with one at once so able and so headstrong. However, on witnessing her prayers and tears, he bade her be of good courage; for it might not be that the child of those tears should perish.
By going to Italy, Augustine could for a time free himself from his mother's importunities; but he could not escape from her prayers, which encompassed him like the providence of God. She followed him to Italy, and there by his marvellous conversion her sorrow was turned into joy.
At Ostia, on their homeward journey, as Augustine and his mother sat at a window conversing of the life of the blessed, she turned to him and said, "Son, there is nothing now I care for in this life. What I shall now do or why I am here, I know not. The one reason I had for wishing to linger in this life a little longer was that I might see you a Catholic Christian before I died. This has God granted me superabundantly in seeing you reject earthly happiness to become his servant. What do I here?" A few days afterwards she had an attack of fever, and died in the year 387.

«¡Que llega el Esposo!»

EVANGELIO DEL DÍA: 27/08/2010
¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

Alaben al Señor con la cítara, toquen en su honor el arpa de diez cuerdas;
Porque la palabra del Señor es recta y él obra siempre con lealtad;

(cf 2,9).

DAILY GOSPEL: 26/08/2010
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Thursday of the Twenty-first week in Ordinary Time

First Letter to the Corinthians 1:1-9.
Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,
to the church of God that is in Corinth, to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy, with all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus,
that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge,
as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you,
so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He will keep you firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus (Christ).
God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalms 145(144):2-3.4-5.6-7.
Every day I will bless you; I will praise your name forever.
Great is the LORD and worthy of high praise; God's grandeur is beyond understanding.
One generation praises your deeds to the next and proclaims your mighty works.
They speak of the splendor of your majestic glory, tell of your wonderful deeds.
They speak of your fearsome power and attest to your great deeds.
They publish the renown of your abounding goodness and joyfully sing of your justice.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 24:42-51.
Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.
Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into.
So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.
Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute to them their food at the proper time?
Blessed is that servant whom his master on his arrival finds doing so.
Amen, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property.
But if that wicked servant says to himself, 'My master is long delayed,'
and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with drunkards,
the servant's master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour
and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
Mt 24,42-51
Commentary of the day
Saint Ambrose (c.340-397), Bishop of Milan and Doctor of the Church
12th sermon on Psalm 118; CSEL 62,258
"Be prepared"
You are happy indeed when Christ knocks at your door. As for the door – this is the faith that safeguards the whole house, provided it is firm. By this door Christ makes his entry and therefore the Church declares in the Song of Songs: «I hear my brother's voice as he knocks at the door.» Listen to him who is knocking; listen to him who seeks to enter: «Open to me, my sister, my beloved, my dove, my perfect one! For my head is wet with dew, my locks with the moisture of the night» (Sg 5,2). Consider what time God the Word knocks at your door: it is when his head is covered with the moisture of nighttime. For he condescends to visit those undergoing trial and temptation in order that none, overcome by its difficulties, may give way. Thus his head is covered with dew, or moisture, when his body suffers.

Then is the time you should keep watch for fear that, when the Bridegroom comes, he may withdraw again on finding your house shut. Thus, if you sleep and your heart does not awake (Sg 5,2) he will go away before he has knocked; if your heart is awake he will knock and request that the door be opened to him. And so the door of our soul is at our disposal as also are the gates of which it is written: «Lift up, O gates, your lintels; reach up, you ancient portals, that the king of glory may come in» (Ps 24[23],7).

St. Zephyrinus, Pope and Martyr († 217)

SAINT ZEPHYRINUS
Pope and Martyr
(† 217)
Zephyrinus, a native of Rome, succeeded Victor in the pontificate, in the year 198, in which Severus raised the fifth most bloody persecution against the Church, which continued not for two years only, but until the death of that emperor in 211.
Under this furious storm this holy pastor was the support and comfort of the distressed flock of Christ, and he suffered by charity and compassion what every confessor underwent. The triumphs of the martyrs were indeed his joy, but his heart received many deep wounds from the fall of apostates and heretics. Neither did this latter affliction cease when peace was restored to the Church.
Our Saint had also the affliction to see the fall of Tertullian, which seems to have been owing partly to his pride. Eusebius tells us that this holy Pope exerted his zeal so strenuously against the blasphemies of the heretics that they treated him in the most contumelious manner; but it was his glory that they called him the principal defender of Christ's divinity.
St. Zephyrinus filled the pontifical chair nineteen years, dying in 217. He was buried in his own cemetery, on the 26th of August. He is, in some Martyrologies, styled a martyr, which title he might deserve by what he suffered in the persecution, though he perhaps did not die by the executioner.
