Tuesday of the Fifth week of Lent

Book of Numbers 21:4-9. 
From Mount Hor the children of Israel set out on the Red Sea road, to by-pass the land of Edom. But with their patience worn out by the journey,
the people complained against God and Moses, "Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in this desert, where there is no food or water? We are disgusted with this wretched food!"
In punishment the LORD sent among the people saraph serpents, which bit the people so that many of them died.
Then the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned in complaining against the LORD and you. Pray the LORD to take the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people,
and the LORD said to Moses, "Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if anyone who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover."
Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he recovered.

Psalms 102(101):2-3.16-18.19-21. 
LORD, hear my prayer; let my cry come to you.
Do not hide your face from me now that I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.
The nations shall revere your name, LORD, all the kings of the earth, your glory,
Once the LORD has rebuilt Zion and appeared in glory,

Heeding the plea of the lowly, not scorning their prayer.
Let this be written for the next generation, for a people not yet born, that they may praise the LORD:

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 8:21-30. 
Jesus said to the Pharisees: "I am going away and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come."
So the Jews said, "He is not going to kill himself, is he, because he said, 'Where I am going you cannot come'?"
He said to them, "You belong to what is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world.
That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins."
So they said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the beginning.
I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world."
They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father.
So Jesus said (to them), "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me.
The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him."
Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.

"When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM"

Would you like to know what power is concealed in Christ's blood? See from where its outpouring begins and where it has its source: it flows down from the cross and from the Lord's side. As Jesus, now dead, still hung on the cross, says the Gospel, the soldier came up, «thrust his lance into his side and blood and water flowed out» (Jn 19,34). That water was the symbol of baptism and the blood was that of the eucharistic mysteries... It was the soldier, then, who opened his side; he pierced the defences of the holy temple; and I, I found this treasure and made of it my wealth...

«And blood and water flowed from his side.» Don't pass over this mystery without a thought... As I said, this water and blood were symbols of baptism and the eucharistic mysteries. Now the Church was born from those two sacraments: through the bath of rebirth and renewal in the Spirit - baptism in other words - and through the mysteries. But the outward signs of baptism and the mysteries  issued from his side. Therefore Christ formed the Church from his side just as he formed Eve from Adam's side (Gn 2,22).

Hence Paul said, referring to the Lord's side: «We are of his flesh and bones» (cf. Acts 17,29; Gn 2,23). Indeed, just as the Lord took flesh from Adam's side so as to form woman, so Christ gave us blood and water from his side to form the Church. And just as in former times he took flesh from Adam's side while outside himself in sleep, so now he gives us the blood and water after his death..., for from now on death is no more than a sleep. Have you seen how Christ has betrothed his bride? Have you see what food he gives us all? It is from the same food that we are born and nourished. Just as woman conceives children from her own blood and feeds them with her milk, so Christ continually feeds those he has conceived with his

St Julius I, Pope (+ 352)

        St. Julius was a Roman, and chosen Pope on the 6th of February in 337.

        The Arian bishops in the East sent to him three deputies to accuse St. Athanasius, the zealous Patriarch of Alexandria. These accusations, as the order of justice required, Julius imparted to Athanasius, who thereupon sent his deputies to Rome; when, upon an impartial hearing, the advocates of the heretics were confounded and silenced upon every article of their accusation.

        The Arians then demanded a council, and the Pope assembled one in Rome in 341. The Arians instead of appearing held a pretended council at Antioch in 341, in which they presumed to appoint one Gregory, an impious Arian, Bishop of Alexandria, detained the Pope's legates beyond the time mentioned for their appearance; and then wrote to his Holiness, alleging a pretended impossibility of their appearing, on account of the Persian war and other impediments. The Pope easily saw through these pretences, and in a council at Rome examined the cause of St. Athanasius, declared him innocent of the things laid to his charge by the Arians, and confirmed him in his see.

He also acquitted Marcellus of Ancyra, upon his orthodox profession of faith.

        He drew up and sent by Count Gabian to the Oriental Eusebian bishops, who had first demanded a council and then refused to appear in it, an excellent letter, which is looked upon as one of the finest monuments of ecclesiastical antiquity.

        Finding the Eusebians still obstinate, he moved Constans, Emperor of the West, to demand the concurrence of his brother Constantius in the assembling of a general council at Sardica in Illyricum.  This was opened in May 347, and declared St. Athanasius and Marcellus of Ancyra orthodox and innocent, deposed certain Arian bishops, and framed twenty-one canons of discipline.

        St. Julius reigned fifteen years, two months, and six days, dying on the 12th of April, 352.

Libro de los Números 21,4-9. 
Los israelitas partieron del monte Hor por el camino del Mar Rojo, para bordear el territorio de Edóm. Pero en el camino, el pueblo perdió la paciencia
y comenzó a hablar contra Dios y contra Moisés: "¿Por qué nos hicieron salir de Egipto para hacernos morir en el desierto? ¡Aquí no hay pan ni agua, y ya estamos hartos de esta comida miserable!".
Entonces el Señor envió contra el pueblo unas serpientes abrasadoras, que mordieron a la gente, y así murieron muchos israelitas.
El pueblo acudió a Moisés y le dijo: "Hemos pecado hablando contra el Señor y contra ti. Intercede delante del Señor, para que aleje de nosotros esas serpientes". Moisés intercedió por el pueblo,
y el Señor le dijo: "Fabrica una serpiente abrasadora y colócala sobre un asta. Y todo el que haya sido mordido, al mirarla, quedará curado".
Moisés hizo una serpiente de bronce y la puso sobre un asta. Y cuando alguien era mordido por una serpiente, miraba hacia la serpiente de bronce y quedaba curado.

Salmo 102(101),2-3.16-18.19-21. 
Señor, escucha mi oración y llegue a ti mi clamor;
no me ocultes tu rostro en el momento del peligro; inclina hacia mí tu oído, respóndeme pronto, cuando te invoco.
Las naciones temerán tu Nombre, Señor, y los reyes de la tierra se rendirán ante tu gloria:
cuando el Señor reedifique a Sión y aparezca glorioso en medio de ella;

cuando acepte la oración del desvalido y no desprecie su plegaria.
Quede esto escrito para el tiempo futuro y un pueblo renovado alabe al Señor:
porque él se inclinó desde su alto Santuario y miró a la tierra desde el cielo,
para escuchar el lamento de los cautivos y librar a los condenados a muerte. Los hijos de tus servidores tendrán una morada y su descendencia estará segura ante ti,


Evangelio según San Juan 8,21-30. 
Jesús les dijo también: "Yo me voy, y ustedes me buscarán y morirán en su pecado. Adonde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir".
Los judíos se preguntaban: "¿Pensará matarse para decir: 'Adonde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir'?".
Jesús continuó: "Ustedes son de aquí abajo, yo soy de lo alto. Ustedes son de este mundo, yo no soy de este mundo.
Por eso les he dicho: 'Ustedes morirán en sus pecados'. Porque si no creen que Yo Soy, morirán en sus pecados".
Los judíos le preguntaron: "¿Quién eres tú?". Jesús les respondió: "Esto es precisamente lo que les estoy diciendo desde el comienzo.
De ustedes, tengo mucho que decir, mucho que juzgar. Pero aquel que me envió es veraz, y lo que aprendí de él es lo que digo al mundo".
Ellos no comprendieron que Jesús se refería al Padre.
Después les dijo: "Cuando ustedes hayan levantado en alto al Hijo del hombre, entonces sabrán que Yo Soy y que no hago nada por mí mismo, sino que digo lo que el Padre me enseñó.
El que me envió está conmigo y no me ha dejado solo, porque yo hago siempre lo que le agrada".
Mientras hablaba así, muchos creyeron en él.

     ¿Quieres saber el valor de la sangre de Cristo?  Remontémonos a las figuras que profetizaron y recorramos las antiguas Escrituras. Inmolad ¬¬–dice Moisés¬- un cordero de un año; tomad su sangre y rociad las dos jambas y el dintel de la casa.  «¿Qué dices Moisés?  La sangre de un cordero irracional, ¿puede salvar a los hombre dotados de razón?»  «Sin duda –responde Moisés-:  no porque se trate de sangre, sino porque en esta sangre se contiene una profecía de la sangre del Señor.»
Si hoy, pues, el enemigo, en lugar de ver las puertas rociadas con sangre simbólica, ve brillar en los labios de los fieles, puertas de los templos de Cristo, la sangre del verdadero Cordero, huirá todavía más lejos.
     ¿Deseas descubrir aún por otro medio el valor de esta sangre?  Mira de dónde brotó y cuál sea su fuente.  Empezó a brotar de la misma cruz y su fuente fue el costado del Señor.  Pues muerto ya el Señor, dice el Evangelio. Uno de los soldados se acercó con la lanza y le traspasó el costado, y al punto salió agua y sangre:  agua, como símbolo del bautismo; sangre, como figura de la eucaristía.  El soldado le traspasó el costado, abrió una brecha en el muro del templo santo, y yo encuentro el tesoro escondido y me alegro con la riqueza hallada.  Esto fue lo que ocurrió con el cordero:  los judíos sacrificaron el cordero, y yo recibo el fruto del sacrificio.
     Del costado salió sangre y agua.  No quiero, amado oyente, que pases con indiferencia ante tan gran misterio, pues me falta explicarte aún otra interpretación mística.  He dicho que esta agua y esta sangre eran símbolos del bautismo y de la eucaristía.  Pues bien, con estos dos sacramentos se edifica la Iglesia:  con el agua de la regeneración y con la renovación del Espíritu Santo, es decir, con el bautismo y la eucaristía, que han brotado ambos del costado.  Del costado de Jesús se formó, pues, la Iglesia, como del costado de Adán fue formada Eva.
     Por esta misma razón, afirma San Pablo:  Somos miembros de su cuerpo, formado de sus huesos, aludiendo con ello al costado de Cristo.  Pues del mismo modo que Dios hizo a la mujer del costado de Adán, de igual manera Jesucristo nos dio el agua y la sangre salida de su costado, para edificar la Iglesia.  Y de la misma manera que entonces Dios tomó la costilla de Adán, mientras éste dormía, así también nos dio el agua y la sangre después que Cristo hubo muerto.
     Mirad de qué manera Cristo se ha unido a su esposa, considerad con qué alimento la nutre.  Con un mismo alimento hemos nacido y nos alimentamos.  De la misma manera que la mujer se siente impulsada por su misma naturaleza a alimentar con su propia sangre, y con su leche a aquel a quien ha dado a luz, así también Cristo alimenta siempre con su sangre a aquellos a quienes Él mismo ha hecho renacer.

martes 12 Abril 2011 San Zenón de Verona El murió hacia el año 380. Se le conocía  solamente gracias a los cien sermones que se le atribuyen. Fue obispo de Verona, cerca de Venecia en  el 362. Lo primero que aparece de su figura ,está  en Juliano el Apóstata (361-363).  Es el caso de  un clérigo pagano restablecido en su cargo durante el imperio,  pero al que se le prohibió que hiciera proselitismo entre  los cristianos. Otro dato es el que proviene de Teodosia. Fue  ella quien proclamó el cristianismo como religión del Estado. El obispo  Zenón vivía al modo, al estilo propio que llevaban los  apóstoles. Se le suele representar en el arte e iconografía como  el santo que lleva un pez para recordarnos que, si  no quieres estar a cargo de nadie, debes ir a  pescar al río o al mar para comer lo necesario. Buena  idea  y magnífica lección la que nos deja su  simbología que, como siempre, trasciende la mirada hacia delante y  nunca hacia atrás. A los presbíteros en esa comunidad, yo, prebístero como ellos testigos de los sufrimientos de Cristo y partícipe de la gloria que va a descubrirse, os exhorto: Sed pastores del rebaño de Dios vuestro cargo, gobernándolo, no a la fuerza, sino de buena gana, como Dios quiere, no por sórdida ganancia, sino con generosidad, no como dominadores sobre la heredad de Dios, sino convirtiéndoos en modelos del rebaño. Y cuándo aparezca el supremo Pastor, recibiréis la corona de gloria que no se marchita.  1 Pe 5, 1-4 Señor, tú que por la predicación de San Zenón de Verona obispo llamaste a nuestros padres a la luz admirable del Evangelio, te pedimos que, por su intercesión, nosotros crezcamos también en tu gracia y en el conocimiento de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
