Saturday of the Fifth week of Lent

Book of Ezekiel 37:21-28. 
Thus says the Lord GOD: I will take the children of Israel from among the nations to which they have come, and gather them from all sides to bring them back to their land.
I will make them one nation upon the land, in the mountains of Israel, and there shall be one prince for them all. Never again shall they be two nations, and never again shall they be divided into two kingdoms.
No longer shall they defile themselves with their idols, their abominations, and all their transgressions. I will deliver them from all their sins of apostasy, and cleanse them so that they may be my people and I may be their God.
My servant David shall be prince over them, and there shall be one shepherd for them all; they shall live by my statutes and carefully observe my decrees.
They shall live on the land which I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where their fathers lived; they shall live on it forever, they, and their children, and their children's children, with my servant David their prince forever.
I will make with them a covenant of peace; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them, and I will multiply them, and put my sanctuary among them forever.
My dwelling shall be with them; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Thus the nations shall know that it is I, the LORD, who make Israel holy, when my sanctuary shall be set up among them forever.

Book of Jeremiah 31:10.11-12.13. 
Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, proclaim it on distant coasts, and say: He who scattered Israel, now gathers them together, he guards them as a shepherd his flock.
The LORD shall ransom Jacob, he shall redeem him from the hand of his conqueror.
Shouting, they shall mount the heights of Zion, they shall come streaming to the LORD'S blessings: The grain, the wine, and the oil, the sheep and the oxen; They themselves shall be like watered gardens, never again shall they languish.
Then the virgins shall make merry and dance, and young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into joy, I will console and gladden them after their sorrows.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 11:45-56. 
Many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what Jesus had done began to believe in him.
But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, "What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs.
If we leave him alone, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our land and our nation."
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing,
nor do you consider that it is better for you that one man should die instead of the people, so that the whole nation may not perish."
He did not say this on his own, but since he was high priest for that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God.
So from that day on they planned to kill him.
So Jesus no longer walked about in public among the Jews, but he left for the region near the desert, to a town called Ephraim, and there he remained with his disciples.
Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before Passover to purify themselves.
They looked for Jesus and said to one another as they were in the temple area, "What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?"

"From that day on the Sanhedrin planned to kill him"

O Lord, everything you teach us might seem too difficult, too heavy to bear were you to speak to us from another level, but since you teach us more by example than in speech, you who are «Master and Teacher» (Jn 13,14), how could we venture to contradict, we who are servants and pupils. What you say is perfectly true, what you command is perfectly just: the cross from which you speak is a proof of it. This blood flowing down in torrents is also its witness: it cries out with all its might (Gn 4,10). And finally, this death itself: if it could tear apart the veil of the Temple from a distance and split the hardest of rocks (Mt 27,51), how could it not do the same – and still more – for the hearts of believers? How could it not lead them to surrender themselves?

Lord, we would repay you with love for love, and if our desire to follow you does not as yet come from our love for you, frail as it is, may it at least come from our love for your love. If you draw us after you «we will run to the fragrance of your sweet odors» (Sg 1,4 LXX). Not only do we wish to love and follow you but we are determined to despise this world... when we see how you, our leader, did not concern yourself with the enjoyments of this life. We behold you confronting death, not on your bed but on the wood that renders justice. King though you were, you wanted no other throne than this gallows... Drawn by your example as king, full of wisdom, we repel the call of this world and its pleasures, and taking your cross on our shoulders we decide to follow you alone... Only grant us the help we need; make us strong enough to follow you.

EIGHTEEN MARTYRS OF SARAGOSSA
and ST. ENCRATIS, or ENGRATIA
Virgin, Martyr
(+ 304)

        St. Optatus and seventeen other holy men received the crown of martyrdom on the same day, at Saragossa, under the cruel Governor Dacian, in the persecution of Diocletian, in 304. Two others, Caius and Crementius, died of their torments after a second conflict.

        The Church also celebrates on this day the triumph of St. Encratis, or Engratia, Virgin. She was a native of Portugal. Her father had promised her in marriage to a man of quality in Roussillon; but fearing the dangers and despising the vanities of the world, and resolving to preserve her virginity, in order to appear more agreeable to her heavenly Spouse and serve Him without hindrance, she stole from her father's house and fled privately to Saragossa, where the persecution was hottest, under the eyes of Dacian. She even reproached him with his barbarities, upon which he ordered her to be long tormented in the most inhuman manner: her sides were torn with iron hooks, and one of her breasts was cut off, so that the inner parts of her chest were exposed to view, and part of her liver was pulled out. In this condition she was sent back to prison, being still alive, and died by the mortifying of her wounds, in 304.

        The relics of all these martyrs were found at Saragossa in 1389.

Libro de Ezequiel 37,21-28. 
Entonces les dirás: Así habla el Señor: Yo voy a tomar a los israelitas de entre las naciones adonde habían ido; los reuniré de todas partes y los llevaré a su propio suelo.
Haré de ellos una sola nación en la tierra, en las montañas de Israel, y todos tendrán un solo rey: ya no formarán dos naciones ni estarán más divididos en dos reinos.
Ya no volverán a contaminarse con sus ídolos, con sus abominaciones y con todas sus rebeldías. Los salvaré de sus pecados de apostasía y los purificaré: ellos serán mi Pueblo y yo seré su Dios.
Mi servidor David reinará sobre ellos y todos ellos tendrán un solo pastor. Observarán mis leyes, cumplirán mis preceptos y los pondrán en práctica.
Habitarán en la tierra que di a mi servidor Jacob, donde habitaron sus padres. Allí habitarán para siempre, ellos, sus hijos y sus nietos; y mi servidor David será su príncipe eternamente.
Estableceré para ellos una alianza de paz, que será para ellos una alianza eterna. Los instalaré, los multiplicaré y pondré mi Santuario en medio de ellos para siempre.
Mi morada estará junto a ellos: yo seré su Dios y ellos serán mi Pueblo.
Y cuando mi Santuario esté en medio de ellos para siempre, las naciones sabrán que yo soy el Señor, el que santifico a Israel.

Libro de Jeremías 31,10.11-12.13. 
¡Escuchen, naciones, la palabra del Señor, anúncienla en las costas más lejanas! Digan: "El que dispersó a Israel lo reunirá, y lo cuidará como un pastor a su rebaño".
Porque el Señor ha rescatado a Jacob, lo redimió de una mano más fuerte que él.
Llegarán gritando de alegría a la altura de Sión, afluirán hacia los bienes del Señor, hacia el trigo, el vino nuevo y el aceite, hacia las crías de ovejas y de vacas. Sus almas serán como un jardín bien regado y no volverán a desfallecer.
Entonces la joven danzará alegremente, los jóvenes y los viejos se regocijarán; yo cambiaré su duelo en alegría, los alegraré y los consolaré de su aflicción.

Evangelio según San Juan 11,45-57. 
Al ver lo que hizo Jesús, muchos de los judíos que habían ido a casa de María creyeron en él.
Pero otros fueron a ver a los fariseos y les contaron lo que Jesús había hecho.
Los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos convocaron un Consejo y dijeron: "¿Qué hacemos? Porque este hombre realiza muchos signos.
Si lo dejamos seguir así, todos creerán en él, y los romanos vendrán y destruirán nuestro Lugar santo y nuestra nación".
Uno de ellos, llamado Caifás, que era Sumo Sacerdote ese año, les dijo: "Ustedes no comprenden nada.
¿No les parece preferible que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo y no que perezca la nación entera?".
No dijo eso por sí mismo, sino que profetizó como Sumo Sacerdote que Jesús iba a morir por la nación,
y no solamente por la nación, sino también para congregar en la unidad a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.
A partir de ese día, resolvieron que debían matar a Jesús.
Por eso él no se mostraba más en público entre los judíos, sino que fue a una región próxima al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraím, y allí permaneció con sus discípulos.
Como se acercaba la Pascua de los judíos, mucha gente de la región había subido a Jerusalén para purificarse.
Buscaban a Jesús y se decían unos a otros en el Templo: "¿Qué les parece, vendrá a la fiesta o no?".
Los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado orden de que si alguno conocía el lugar donde él se encontraba, lo hiciera saber para detenerlo.

        Señor, todo esto que tu nos enseñas puede parecernos muy difícil, demasiado pesado, si tu hubieras hablado desde otra tribuna; pero desde que nos enseñas más por el ejemplo que por palabra, Tú que eres "Señor y Maestro" (Jn 13,14), ¿cómo nos atreveremos a decir  lo contrario, nosotros que somos los siervos y los aprendices? Lo que dices es perfectamente cierto, lo que ordenas perfectamente justo. Esta Cruz desde donde hablas da testimonio. Esta sangre fluyendo también da testimonio; Gritó con todas sus fuerzas (Gn 4.10). Y, finalmente, incluso la muerte: si ha podido rasgar el velo del templo a distancia y la separación de las piedras más consistentes (Mt 27,51), ¿qué no hará por ella misma y más aún por el corazón de los creyentes?...

        Señor, queremos devolverte amor por amor; y si el deseo de seguirte no procede todavía de nuestro amor por ti, porque es muy débil, por lo menos que nuestro amor provenga de tu amor. Si nos atraes hacia ti, "nosotros correremos tras el olor de tus perfumes" (Ct 1,4 LXX): Nosotros no deseamos solamente amarte, te seguimos, y estamos decididos a despreciar este mundo...  puesto que vemos que Tú, nuestro líder, no te has dejado capturar por los placeres de esta vida. Te hemos visto enfrentar la muerte, no en una cama, sino sobre el madero de ajusticiado; y aunque eres rey, no quisiste tener otro trono que este patíbulo... Atraídos por tu ejemplo de rey sabio, rechazamos la llamada de este mundo y sus lujos, y tomando tu cruz sobre nuestros hombros, proponemos seguirte, sólo a Ti...Danos la ayuda necesaria; Haz que seamos lo suficientemente fuertes para seguirte.

sábado 16 Abril 2011 Santa Bernardita Soubirous de Lourdes Santa Bernardita Soubirous (1879). Nació en Lourdes (Francia) en 1844. Hija de padres pobres. En el bautismo le pusieron por nombre María Bernarda, pero todos la llamaban Bernardita. La niña tuvo siempre muy débil salud a causa de la falta de alimentación suficiente, y del estado lamentablemente pobre de la habitación donde moraba. En los primeros años sufrió la enfermedad de cólera que la dejó sumamente debilitada. A causa también del clima terriblemente frío en invierno, en aquella región, Bernardita adquirió desde los diez años la enfermedad del asma, que al comprimir los bronquios produce continuos ahogos y falta de respiración. Esta enfermedad la acompañará y la atormentará toda su vida. Al final de su existencia sufrirá también de tuberculosis. Bernardita a los 14 años no sabía leer ni escribir ni había hecho la Primera Comunión porque no había logrado aprender el catecismo. Pero tenía unas grandes cualidades: rezaba mucho a la Virgen y jamás decía una mentira. Desde el 11 de febrero de 1859 hasta el 16 de julio del mismo año, la Sma. Virgen se le aparece 18 veces a Bernardita. Las apariciones las podemos leer en detalle en el día 11 de febrero. La vida de la jovencita, después de las apariciones estuvo llena de enfermedades, penalidades y humillaciones, pero con todo esto fue adquiriendo un grado de santidad tan grande que se ganó enorme premio para el cielo. Bernardita pidió ser admitida en la Comunidad de Hijas de la Caridad de Nevers. Demoraron en admitirla porque su salud era muy débil. Pero al fin la admitieron. A los 4 meses de estar en la comunidad estuvo a punto de morir por un ataque de asma, y  recibieron sus votos religiosos, pero enseguida curó. Bernardita tuvo por superiora durante los primeros años de religiosa a una mujer que le tenía una antipatía total y casi todo lo que ella hacía lo juzgaba negativamente. Y ella jamás se quejaba ni se disgustaba por todo esto. Duró quince años de religiosa. Los primeros 6 años estuvo trabajando, pero fue tratada con mucha indiferencia por las superioras. Después los otros 9 años padeció noche y día de dos terribles enfermedades: el asma y la tuberculosis. Al llegar a la Comunidad reunieron a las religiosas y le pidieron que les contara cómo habían sido las apariciones de la Virgen. Luego le prohibieron volver a hablar de esto, y en los 15 años de religiosa ya no se le permitió tratar este tema. Son sacrificios que a los santos les preparan altísimo puesto en el cielo. El 16 de abril de 1879, exclamó emocionada: "Yo vi la Virgen. Sí, la vi, la vi ¡Qué hermosa era! " Y después de unos momentos de silencio exclamó emocionada: "Ruega Señora por esta pobre pecadora", y apretando el crucifijo sobre su corazón se quedó muerta. Tenía apenas 35 años. A los funerales de Bernardita asistió una muchedumbre inmensa. Y ella empezó a conseguir milagros de Dios en favor de los que le pedían su ayuda. El 8 de diciembre de 1933, el Santo Padre Pío XI  la declaró santa. Oremos Concédenos, Señor, un conocimiento profundo y un amor intenso a tu santo nombre, semejantes a los que diste a Santa Bernardita, para que así, sirviéndote con sinceridad y lealtad, a ejemplo suyo también nosotros te agrademos con nuestra fe y con nuestras obras. Por nuestro Señor Jesucristo, tu Hijo.
