DAILY GOSPEL: 15/03/2011
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68
Tuesday of the First week of Lent
Book of Isaiah 55:10-11.
Thus says the LORD: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats,
So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; It shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.
Psalms 34(33):4-5.6-7.16-17.18-19.
Magnify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together.
I sought the LORD, who answered me, delivered me from all my fears.
Look to God that you may be radiant with joy and your faces may not blush for shame.
In my misfortune I called, the LORD heard and saved me from all distress.
The LORD has eyes for the just and ears for their cry.
The LORD'S face is against evildoers to wipe out their memory from the earth.
When the just cry out, the LORD hears and rescues them from all distress.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed.
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 6:7-15.
Jesus said to his disciples: «In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words.
Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
This is how you are to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and do not subject us to the final test, but deliver us from the evil one.
If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you.
But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.

Prayer : Seeking the Heart of God, (with Brother Roger)
« Our Father»
There is only one voice to raise up from the earth: that of Christ. That one voice unites and brings together in itself every voice raised in prayer. As for praying – how many people have no idea how to do it, how many dare not and how many don't want to! But within the communion of saints we act and pray in their name.
We pray in the name of those who do not pray. Prayer must become our «job», as it were. The apostles understood this perfectly: when they realized they were in danger of getting caught up in a multitude of tasks they decided to give themselves to continual prayer and the service of the Word (Acts 6,4).
God wants us to become more and more like children in our prayer, more humble, more grateful, and not to try to pray alone since we all belong to the mystical body of Christ, which is always at prayer. It isn't a question of «I am praying», but in me and with me Jesus prays and, therefore, it is the Body of Christ that prays.

St. Louise de Marcillac (1591-1660)
Saint Louise of Marillac
(1591-1660)
(1591-1660)
Louise de Marillac was born in France, on August 12, 1591. She was educated by the Dominican nuns at Poissy. She desired to become a nun but on the advice of her confessor, she married Antony LeGras, an official in the Queen's service, in 1613.
After Antony's death in 1625, she met St. Vincent de Paul, who became her spiritual adviser. She devoted the rest of her life to working with him. She helped direct his Ladies of Charity in their work of caring for the sick, the poor, and the neglected. In 1633 she set up a training center, of which she was Directress in her own home, for candidates seeking to help in her work. This was the beginning of the Sisters (or Daughters, as Vincent preferred) of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul (though it was not formally approved until 1655). She took her vows in 1634 and attracted great numbers of candidates. She wrote a rule for the community, and in 1642, Vincent allowed four of the members to take vows. Formal approval placed the community under Vincent and his Congregation of the Missions, with Louise as Superior.
She traveled all over France establishing her Sisters in hospitals, orphanages, and other institutions.
She expired in 1660. Since then the Congregation has spread all over the world.
She was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1934, and was declared Patroness of Social Workers by Pope John XXIII in 1960.
