« So that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received» (Lk 1,4)

DAILY GOSPEL: 18/10/2010
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Saint Luke, evangelist - Feast

Second Letter to Timothy 4:10-17.
For Demas, enamored of the present world, deserted me and went to Thessalonica, Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.
Luke is the only one with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is helpful to me in the ministry.
I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus.
When you come, bring the cloak I left with Carpus in Troas, the papyrus rolls, and especially the parchments.
Alexander the coppersmith did me a great deal of harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds.
You too be on guard against him, for he has strongly resisted our preaching.
At my first defense no one appeared on my behalf, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them!
But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion's mouth.

Psalms 145(144):10-11.12-13.17-18.
All your works give you thanks, O LORD and your faithful bless you.
They speak of the glory of your reign and tell of your great works,
Making known to all your power, the glorious splendor of your rule.
Your reign is a reign for all ages, your dominion for all generations. The LORD is trustworthy in every word, and faithful in every work.
You, LORD, are just in all your ways, faithful in all your works.
You, LORD, are near to all who call upon you, to all who call upon you in truth.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 10:1-9.
Jesus appointed seventy-two other disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit.
He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.
Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.
Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.
Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.'
If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.
Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another.
Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you,
cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'

Homilies on Saint Luke, no. 1,1-2 (cf. SC 87, p. 99)
« So that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received» (Lk 1,4)
«Many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled amongst us... I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received» (Lk 1,1-4)

In former times many among the Jews claimed to have the gift of prophecy but some were false prophets... It was the same at the time of the New Testament, when many «have tried» to write gospels but not all have been accepted... The words «have tried» contain a hidden accusation against those who set about composing gospels without the grace of the Holy Spirit. Matthew, Mark, John and Luke did not «try» to write but, filled with the Holy Spirit, were those who wrote the true gospels...

Thus the Church possesses four gospels; the heretics have any number of them... «Many have tried to write» but only four gospels have been recognised, and it is from those that we must draw what we need to know about our Lord and Savior's person if light is to be thrown on it. I know there is a gospel called «according to Thomas» and another «according to Matthias», and we are reading some others also lest we give the impression of ignorance before those who think they know a thing or two when they know these texts. But in all this we only approve what the Church approves: we should only recognise four gospels. This, then, is what can be said about the text of Saint Luke's prologue: «Many have tried to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled amongst us."

St. Luke, Evangelist - Feast

SAINT LUKE
Evangelist
(Feast)
St. Luke, a physician at Antioch, and a painter, became a convert of St. Paul, and afterwards his fellow-laborer. He is best known to us as the historian of the New Testament. Though not an eye-witness of our Lord's life, the Evangelist diligently gathered information from the lips of the apostles, and wrote, as he tells us, all things in order.
The acts of the Apostles were written by this Evangelist as a sequel to his Gospel, bringing the history .of the Church down to the first imprisonment of St. Paul at Rome. The humble historian never names himself, but by his occasional use of "we" for "they" we are able to detect his presence in the scenes which he describes. We thus find that he sailed with St. Paul and Silas from Troas to Macedonia; stayed behind apparently for seven years at Philippi, and, lastly, shared the shipwreck and perils of the memorable voyage to Rome.
Here his own narrative ends, but from St. Paul's Epistles we learn that St. Luke was his faithful companion to the end. He died a martyr's death some time afterwards in Achaia.
