¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

no apartes de nosotros tu misericordia. Por Abrahán, tu amigo; por Isaac, tu siervo; por Israel, tu consagrado;

El Señor es bondadoso y recto: por eso muestra el camino a los extraviados;

           (Prosternarse)

Sí Señor y Rey, concédeme ver mis faltas
y no condenar a mi hermano,
tu que eres bendito por los siglos. Amén.

           (Prosternarse.

Lent leads us to a baptismal resurrection

DAILY GOSPEL: 28/03/2011
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Monday of the Third week of Lent

2nd book of Kings 5:1-15.
Naaman, the army commander of the king of Aram, was highly esteemed and respected by his master, for through him the LORD had brought victory to Aram. But valiant as he was, the man was a leper.
Now the Arameans had captured from the land of Israel in a raid a little girl, who became the servant of Naaman's wife.
"If only my master would present himself to the prophet in Samaria," she said to her mistress, "he would cure him of his leprosy."
Naaman went and told his lord just what the slave girl from the land of Israel had said.
"Go," said the king of Aram. "I will send along a letter to the king of Israel." So Naaman set out, taking along ten silver talents, six thousand gold pieces, and ten festal garments.
To the king of Israel he brought the letter, which read: "With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you, that you may cure him of his leprosy."
When he read the letter, the king of Israel tore his garments and exclaimed: "Am I a god with power over life and death, that this man should send someone to me to be cured of leprosy? Take note! You can see he is only looking for a quarrel with me!"
When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his garments, he sent word to the king: "Why have you torn your garments? Let him come to me and find out that there is a prophet in Israel."
Naaman came with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha's house.
The prophet sent him the message: "Go and wash seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will heal, and you will be clean."
But Naaman went away angry, saying, "I thought that he would surely come out and stand there to invoke the LORD his God, and would move his hand over the spot, and thus cure the leprosy.
Are not the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be cleansed?" With this, he turned about in anger and left.
But his servants came up and reasoned with him. "My father," they said, "if the prophet had told you to do something extraordinary, would you not have done it? All the more now, since he said to you, 'Wash and be clean,' should you do as he said."
So Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times at the word of the man of God. His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
He returned with his whole retinue to the man of God. On his arrival he stood before him and said, "Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel. Please accept a gift from your servant."

Psalms 42(41):2.3.43(42):3.4.
As the deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God.
My being thirsts for God, the living God. When can I go and see the face of God?
Send your light and fidelity, that they may be my guide And bring me to your holy mountain, to the place of your dwelling,
That I may come to the altar of God, to God, my joy, my delight. Then I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 4:24-30.
Jesus said to the people in the synagogue at Nazareth: «Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place.
Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land.
It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian."
When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury.
They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.
But he passed through the midst of them and went away.

Commentary of the day
Saint Ambrose (c.340-397), Bishop of Milan and Doctor of the Church
Mysteries, § 16-21 (trans. SC 25, p. 112)
Lent leads us to a baptismal resurrection
Naaman was a Syrian who had leprosy and could not be cured by anyone. Then a young slave girl said there was a prophet in Israel who could cleans him of his leprous affliction... Now learn who was that young girl among his slaves: she was the youthful gathering from among all the Gentiles, namely the Church of the Lord, who had formerly been crushed by the slavery of sin when as yet she did not possess the freedom of grace. It was on her advice that this empty-headed gentile people paid attention to the prophets' words, which they had long held in doubt. No sooner had he believed he must obey than he was washed free of every infection from his misdeeds. Naaman had doubted before his cure; but you have been cured already and therefore ought not to doubt.

This is the reason why you have already been told not just to believe what you see as you draw near to the baptistery, lest you say: "Is this the great mystery that 'eye has not seen nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the human heart'? (1Cor 2,9). I see water as I see it every day; can these waters, into which I have frequently gone down without ever being cleansed, make me clean?" Learn from this that water does not cleanse without the Spirit. This is why you have read that: the "three witnesses at baptism are one: the water, the blood and the Spirit" (1Jn 5,7-8). For if you take one of these away it is no longer the sacrament of baptism. Indeed, what use is the water without the cross of Christ? It's just plain matter without any kind of sacramental effect. Similarly, without water there is no mystery of regeneration. "No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit" (Jn 3,5). The catechumen believes in the cross of the Lord Jesus with which he is signed, but if he has not been baptised in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit he cannot receive the remission of his sins nor draw from the gift of spiritual grace.

So this Syrian immersed himself seven times in the Law, but you have been baptised in the name of the Trinity. You have confessed the Father...., you have confessed the Son, you have confessed the Holy Spirit... You have died to the world and risen again for God and, after a certain fashion, been buried in this worldly element at the same time. Dead to sin, you have been raised for eternal life (Rm 6,4).

St Gontran, King (545-592)

SAINT GONTRAN
King
(545-592)
St. Gontran was the son of King Clotaire, and grandson of Clovis I. and St. Clotildis. Being the second son, whilst his brothers Charibert reigned at Paris, and Sigebert in Ostrasia, residing at Metz, he was crowned king of Orleans and Burgundy in 561, making Chalons his capital.
When compelled to take up arms against his ambitious brothers and the Lombards, he made no other use of his victories, under the conduct of a brave general called Mommol, than to give peace to his dominions. The crimes in which the barbarous manners of his nation involved him he effaced by tears of repentance.
The prosperity of his reign, both in peace and war, condemns those who think that human policy cannot be modelled by the maxims of the Gospel, whereas nothing can render a government more flourishing.
He always treated the pastors of the Church with respect and veneration. He was the protector of the oppressed, and the tender parent of his subjects. He gave the greatest attention to the care of the sick. He fasted, prayed, wept, and offered himself to God night and day as a victim ready to be sacrificed on the altar of His justice, to avert
His indignation which he believed he himself had provoked and drawn down upon his innocent people. He was a severe punisher of crimes in his officers and others, and, by many wholesome regulations, restrained the barbarous licentiousness of his troops; but no man was more ready to forgive offences against his own person.
With royal magnificence he built and endowed many churches and monasteries.
This good king died in 592, in the sixty-eighth year of his age, having reigned thirty-one years and some months.

¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

Tú has confesado el Padre..., tú has confesado el Hijo, tú has confesado el Espíritu Santo...

« Are you greater than our father, Jacob? »

Third Sunday of Lent

Book of Exodus 1:3-7.
In those days, in their thirst for water, the people grumbled against Moses, saying, «Why did you ever make us leave Egypt? Was it just to have us die here of thirst  with our children and our livestock?»
So Moses cried out to the LORD, "What shall I do with this people? A little more and they will stone me!"
The LORD answered Moses, "Go over there in front of the people, along with some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the staff with which you struck the river.
I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink." This Moses did, in the presence of the elders of Israel.
The place was called Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled there and tested the LORD, saying, "Is the LORD in our midst or not?"

Psalms 95(94):1-2.6-7.8-9.
Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD; cry out to the rock of our salvation.
Let us greet him with a song of praise, joyfully sing out our psalms.
Enter, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us.
For this is our God, whose people we are, God's well-tended flock. Oh, that today you would hear his voice:

Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah in the desert.
There your ancestors tested me; they tried me though they had seen my works.

Letter to the Romans 5:1-2.5-8.
Brothers and sisters: Since we have been justified by faith,  we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom we have gained access (by faith) to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God.
and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit that has been given to us.
For Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the ungodly.
Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die.
But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 4:5-42.
Jesus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar,  near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
Jacob's well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon.
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."
His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
The Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)
Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."
(The woman) said to him, "Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water?
Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?"
Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again;
but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."
Jesus said to her, "Go call your husband and come back."
The woman answered and said to him, "I do not have a husband." Jesus answered her, "You are right in saying, 'I do not have a husband.'
For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true."
The woman said to him, "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.
Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem."
Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews.
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him.
God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth."
The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything."
Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking with you."
At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman, but still no one said, "What are you looking for?" or "Why are you talking with her?"
The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people,
Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Messiah?
They went out of the town and came to him.
Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat."
But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know."
So the disciples said to one another, "Could someone have brought him something to eat?"
Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work.
Do you not say, 'In four months the harvest will be here'? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest.
The reaper is already receiving his payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together.
For here the saying is verified that 'One sows and another reaps.'
I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work."
Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me everything I have done."
When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days.
Many more began to believe in him because of his word,
and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world."

Commentary of the day
Saint Jacob of Sarug (c.449-521), Syrian monk and Bishop
Sermon on our Lord and Jacob, the Church and Rachel
« Are you greater than our father, Jacob? »
The sight of Rachel's beauty made Jacob stronger, to a certain extent. He was able to lift the great stone off the top of the well and water the flock (Gn 29,10)... He saw in Rachel, whom he married, a symbol of the Church. That is why, when he embraced her, he had to weep and be distressed (v.11) so that, in his marriage, he might prefigure the sufferings of the Son... How much lovelier is the wedding of the royal Bridegroom than that of his ambassadors! Jacob wept for Rachel when he wed her; our Lord covered the Church with his blood when he saved her. Tears are a symbol of blood since it is not without pain that they flow from one's eyes. The tears of righteous Jacob are a symbol of the Son's great suffering through which the Church of the Gentiles has been saved.

Come, then, behold our Lord: he has come into the world from his Father's side, he has emptied himself so as to complete his course in humility (Phil 2,7)... He saw the Gentiles like a parched flock whose spring of life was closed by sin as by a stone. He saw the Church like Rachel and so he ran towards her and removed the heavy sin as though it were a rock. He has opened up the baptistery for his bride to bathe in; he has drawn water and refreshed the nations of earth as if they were his sheep. With his almighty power he has removed the heavy burden of sin; he has uncovered the spring of sweet water for the whole world....

Yes, our Lord has gone to great trouble for the Church's sake. Out of love God's Son has sold his suffering so that he might wed the forsaken Church at the price of his wounds. For her sake who was worshipping idols he has suffered on the cross. For her sake he willed to be delivered up that she might belong to him, wholly immaculate (Eph 5,25-27). He consented to lead the entire flock of humankind to pasture with the great staff of the cross; he did not turn away from suffering. He submitted to leading all - races, nations, tribes, multitudes and peoples - that in return the Church, his only one, might belong to him.

St John of Egypt (+ 394)

SAINT JOHN OF EGYPT
(+ 394)
Till he was twenty-five, John worked as a carpenter with his father. Then feeling a call from God, he left the world and committed himself to a holy solitary in the desert. His master tried his spirit by many unreasonable commands, bidding him roll the hard rocks, tend dead trees, and the like. John obeyed in all things with the simplicity of a child.
After a careful training of sixteen years he withdrew to the top of a steep cliff to think only of God and his soul. The more he knew of himself, the more he distrusted himself. For the last fifty years, therefore, he never saw women, and seldom men. The result of this vigilance and purity was threefold: a holy joy and cheerfulness which consoled all who conversed with him; perfect obedience to superiors; and, in return for this, authority over creatures, whom he had forsaken for the Creator.
St. Augustine tells us of his appearing in a vision to a holy woman, whose sight he had restored, to avoid seeing her face to face. Devils assailed him continually, but John never ceased his prayer.
From his long communings with God, he turned to men with gifts of healing and prophecy. Twice each week he spoke through a window with those who came to him, blessing oil for their sick and predicting things to come. A deacon came to him in disguise, and he reverently kissed his hand. To the Emperor Theodosius he foretold his future victories and the time of his death.
The three last days of his life John gave wholly to God: on the third he was found on his knees as if in prayer, bud his soul was with the blessed. He died in 394.

« Serás más grande que nuestro padre Jacob? »

EVANGELIO DEL DÍA: 27/03/2011
¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

http://blog.pucp.edu.pe/media/1905/20100110-10ene%20SAN%20ALDO%20ERMITAN-O.jpg

"Coming to his senses he thought... 'Here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my father' "

DAILY GOSPEL: 26/03/2011
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

Saturday of the Second week of Lent

Book of Micah 7:14-15.18-20.
Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance, That dwells apart in a woodland, in the midst of Carmel. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old;
As in the days when you came from the land of Egypt, show us wonderful signs.
Who is there like you, the God who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance; Who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clemency,
And will again have compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt? You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins;
You will show faithfulness to Jacob, and grace to Abraham, As you have sworn to our fathers from days of old.

Psalms 103(102):1-2.3-4.9-10.11-12.
Of David. Bless the LORD, my soul; all my being, bless his holy name!
Bless the LORD, my soul; do not forget all the gifts of God,
Who pardons all your sins, heals all your ills,
Delivers your life from the pit, surrounds you with love and compassion,

God does not always rebuke, nurses no lasting anger,
Has not dealt with us as our sins merit, nor requited us as our deeds deserve.
As the heavens tower over the earth, so God's love towers over the faithful.
As far as the east is from the west, so far have our sins been removed from us.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 15:1-3.11-32.
Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus,
but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."
So to them he addressed this parable.
Then he said, "A man had two sons,
and the younger son said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.' So the father divided the property between them.
After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.
When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need.
So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine.
And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any.
Coming to his senses he thought, 'How many of my father's hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger.
I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers."'
So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.
His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.'
But his father ordered his servants, 'Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast,
because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.' Then the celebration began.
Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing.
He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.
The servant said to him, 'Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'
He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him.
He said to his father in reply, 'Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends.
But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.'
He said to him, 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours.
But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.'"

Commentary of the day
Isaac of Stella (?-c.1171), Cistercian monk
2nd. sermon for All Saints § 13-20 (copyright Cistercian Fathers series, 11)
"Coming to his senses he thought... 'Here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my father' "
"Happy are they who mourn, they shall be comforted" (Mt 5,5). It is as if our Lord were saying: The way to joy is through sorrow, desolation leads to comfort; by losing your life you find it, by making little of it you possess it, by hating it you love it and by despising it you save it (cf. Lk 9,23f.). If you desire to know yourself and to possess yourself, go into yourself and do not search for yourself outside... Return, then, transgressor to your heart, within, where you are truly yourself. Outwardly you are an animal, fashioned as the world is fashioned... but inwardly your are made in the image of God (Gn 1,26) and so are capable of being deified.

Now when a man comes to himself as did that young prodigal son, where does he find himself? Is it not in a far country, in the Land of Unlikeness, and in a strange land where he sits down and weeps as he remembers his father and his home?... "O Adam, where are you?" (Gn 3,9). Still in the shadows, perhaps, so that you cannot see yourself? Sewing together foolish fig leaves to cover your shame? Your eyes are only too open to what is around you and what belonngs to you. But look within, see yourself: there you will find things that are much more shameful...

It must be acknowledged, brethren, that we are truly outside of ourselves... So it has ever been prudent Wisdom's intention to invite to the house of mourning rather than to a house of feasting, that is, to call back into himself the man who had been outside himself, saying: "Happy are they who mourn", and in another passage: "Woe to you that laugh now" (Lk 6,25)... Accordingly, brethren, let us weep before the Lord, who is bounteous in pardon... "Happy are they who mourn." Happy, not because they mourn, but because "they shall be comforted". Sorrow is the road and happiness the comfort.

Bl. Maddalena Caterina Morano (1847-1908)

BLESSED MADDALENA CATERINA MORANO
(1847-1908)
Blessed Maddalena Caterina Morano was born in 1847 into a large family in Chieri, near Turin, Italy. When she was eight years old, her father and older sister died, and so young Maddalena had to work. However, she applied herself to study as well, and in 1866 she received her diploma as an elementary school teacher.
Her studies increased her knowledge of Christian doctrine and her longing to be a saint. She wished to enter religious life, but the needs of her family required her to wait. For 12 years she worked as a rural school teacher in Montaldo and taught catechism in the local parish.
In 1878, having set aside enough savings for her mother's future needs, Maddalena entered the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a congregation founded six years earlier by Don Bosco. She was a model religious, and after a brief but intense novitiate she took her first vows. In 1881, with Don Bosco's blessing, she was sent to Trecastagni (Diocese of Catania), Sicily, and put in charge of an existing institute for women, to which she gave a new orientation inspired by the principles of the Salesian method.
Sicily became her second home, where she carried out a varied and fruitful apostolate. She opened new houses, set up after-school activities and sewing classes, trained teachers, etc. Her real love, though, was for catechism class, since she was convinced that the formation of Christian conscience was the basis of personal maturity and all social improvement. She coordinated catechetical instruction in 18 of Catania's churches and trained lay and religious catechists to bring the Christian message to needy boys and girls.
She spent 25 years in Sicily and served her community as local and provincial superior. She was an attentive mother and caring guide for many local vocations, faithfully living the charism of Mother Maria Mazzarello, co-foundress of the institute. She died in Catania at the age of 61 on 26 March 1908.
She was beatified on November 5, 1994 at Catania by John Paul II.

¿ Señor, a quién iremos?. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Jn 6, 68

Salmo 103(102),1-2.3-4.9-10.11-12.
De David. Bendice al Señor, alma mía, que todo mi ser bendiga a su santo Nombre;
El perdona todas tus culpas y cura todas tus dolencias;
rescata tu vida del sepulcro, te corona de amor y de ternura;

no acusa de manera inapelable ni guarda rencor eternamente;
Cuanto se alza el cielo sobre la tierra, así de inmenso es su amor por los que lo temen;

Ahora mismo iré a la casa de mi padre y le diré: Padre, pequé contra el Cielo y contra ti;

"May it be done to me according to your word"

DAILY GOSPEL: 25/03/2011
«Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.» John 6,68

The Annunciation of the Lord - Solemnity

Book of Isaiah 7:10-14.
The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying:
Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!
But Ahaz answered, "I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!"
Then he said: Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary men, must you also weary my God?
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.

Psalms 40(39):7-8.9.10.11.
Sacrifice and offering you do not want; but ears open to obedience you gave me. Holocausts and sin-offerings you do not require;
so I said, "Here I am; your commands for me are written in the scroll.
To do your will is my delight; my God, your law is in my heart!"
I announced your deed to a great assembly; I did not restrain my lips; you, LORD, are my witness.

Your deed I did not hide within my heart; your loyal deliverance I have proclaimed. I made no secret of your enduring kindness to a great assembly.

Letter to the Hebrews 10:4-10.
It is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats take away sins.
For this reason, when he came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;
holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight in.
Then I said, 'As is written of me in the scroll, Behold, I come to do your will, O God.'"
First he says, "Sacrifices and offerings, holocausts and sin offerings, you neither desired nor delighted in." These are offered according to the law.
Then he says, "Behold, I come to do your will." He takes away the first to establish the second.
By this "will," we have been consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 1:26-38.
The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you."
But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."
But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?"
And the angel said to her in reply, "The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God."
Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.

Commentary of the day

"May it be done to me according to your word"

What previous reason was there for the Son of God's being born of a Virgin? He who was going to consecrate a new order of birth, must himself be born after a novel fashion, concerning which Isaiah foretold how the Lord himself would give a sign. What, then, is the sign? "Behold, a virgin shall conceive a bear a son." Accordingly, a virgin did conceive and bear Emmanuel, God with us (Is 7,14; Mt 1,23). This is the new nativity; a man is born in God because in this man God was born, taking flesh in order that he might reform it with the new seed of the Spirit and cleanse it by the removal of all its ancient stains.

The whole of this new birth was prefigured in ancient type, the Lord being born as man by a dispensation in which a virgin was the medium. The earth was still in a virgin state, reduced as yet by no human labor, with no seed as yet cast into its furrows when, as we are told, God made man out of it into "a living soul" (Gn 2,5.7). As, the, the first Adam was formed of earth, it is a just inference that the second Adam likewise, as the apostle Paul has told us, was formed by God into "a life-giving spirit" (1Cor 15,45)...

When he wanted to recover "his own image and likeness" (Gn 1,26), fallen into the power of the devil, God acted in the same way as he had done when first he created it. For it was while Eve was yet a virgin that she received the word which was to build the edifice of death. Therefore, in the same way, that Word of God which was to raise the fabric of life must be introduced into a virgin's soul ... As Eve had believed the serpent, so Mary believed Gabriel. The sin that Eve occasioned by believing, Mary by believing effaced... The devil's word became as seed to Eve so that she should conceive in humiliation and bring forth in sorrow (Gn 3,16); indeed, she brought forth the one who would be his brother's murderer (4,8). Mary, on the contrary, bore a son who would one day secure salvation to Israel, his own brother.
